SBDC Performance: The Spring

Pandit Debojyoti Bose

Choreographer: Sujata Banerjee

In the mid 1960s, Indian classical music began to appear in popular music, not least in the music of the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The Spring is a colourful Kathak technical piece set in raga Vasant (Spring). Indian classical music is often described as raga music; raga uses a series of musical notes upon which a melody is constructed. Ragas are associated with different times of the day or seasons. The piece was presented in ‘Tarana’ form (a particular classical singing style) and is set in a 16-beat time cycle. - “The group showed immense dedication and commitment and I’m proud SBDC presented the beauty of Kathak amongst 2500 performers” – Guru Sujata Banerjee

“It was my first time experience of performing at a profound venue like The Royal Albert Hall, a memorable occasion at SBDC!” – Mikika, aged 16.
